Students clash in Gilgit college, two dies

GILGIT: A student and a policeman were injured when two groups of students in Government Degree College for Boys Jutial Gilgit collided Tuesday.

The conflict broke out between two groups of students holding a religious program on the grounds of the university. Both groups belong to two religious organizations.

According to police sources, wanted a religious group in the college to lead a religious program, while the other group was opposed. The police were sent to the college to control the situation.

An official said that one of the groups was displaying banners and setting up the stage for the program in the hotel when the police arrived at the university. Members of other religious groups chanted slogans against them, he added.

The official said that the members of the two groups scuffled with each other. They also stoned each other, he added. Police fired tear gas grenades at them and use them in the air firing to control the situation, he added.

The official said that the members of the two religious groups were armed. He said a police officer as Sajjad Ali Nawaz Rasheed and student identifies the ball into the injured. The wounded were taken to a nearby hospital.

The official said the hall was burnt down by unknown assailants. Firefighters were called upon to extinguish the fire, he added.

Registered police a case with the police Jutial but no arrests have been made against members of the two groups.

Seventeen students were expelled from the university. The school will be closed for the next five days.
